My Top 35 Music Therapy Songs… (was ‘A Few’, haha)
These ones have the power to both relax me out of a panic attack (just singing them in my head, etc.) and/OR rev me up motivationally-speaking and/OR rev me up to this seemingly perfect level of ‘emotionally-sound / balanced / stable’ bliss. Yay.
In no particular order, here are a few of such songs off the top of my head (check back for potential future attribution-whoring
Addendum post-list: Oh boy. So much for ‘a few’
The ‘pink hotties‘ are all-timers, and the ‘blue beauties‘ work every time for me, with years and “yeeeeahs” :eddiezzardyay!: of ‘tried, tested and true’!
).
Um, yeah - THE LIST ALREADY
:
- Beautiful Dreamer - most versions (I have a collection, haha), but especially the one by Mandy Barnett ROWR!
- On the Loose ~ Saga (AWWWW YEAAAAAAAH!!!)
- Everyone Will Crawl ~ Charlie Sexton Sextet
- St. Lawrence River ~ David Usher (+too many David Ushers to count, really!)
- That Girl ~ the Barenaked Ladies
- Life, in a Nutshell ~ Barenaked Ladies
- The Old Apartment ~Barenaked Ladies
- Uh-oh - I could also go on forever with the Ladies
- Spiraling Shape ~ They Might Be Giants
- Nightgown of the Sullen Moon ~ They Might Be Giants
- Dr. Worm ~ They Might Be Giants (ad nauseum on TMBG)
- It’s Not My Birthday ~ They Might Be Giants
- Sing Me To Sleep ~ Morrissey (this is an ‘odd one out’, as it is the song I used to self-injure to, but now it’s more of a soothing kind of ‘glory’ song, since I haven’t self-injured in that way in a LONG time… yay! hah.)
- Bigmouth Strikes Again ~ The Smiths (and - imagine this(!) - so many more… how could I not have fallen for the True King of Misery? (and his ‘ilk’!)
I mean, how can anyone… not?! Such genius… /endramble!) - A and B Song ~ Tom McRae
- Line of Fire ~ Tom McRae (another ‘anything by this artist has the potential to catapult me into bliss)
- Advertising on Police Cars ~ Matthew Good (this one can also have extremely adverse effects on me, depending on my mood, but for the most part, it ‘gets me every time’. as does absolutely anything by Matt, particularly the ‘early folk years’, heh. I could spam you forever with inspirational Matt Good songs…)
- Mercy Misses You ~ Matthew Good (one I -have- mutilated to in the past, but it didn’t ‘fit’ as well as ’sing me to sleep’ because of it’s faster ‘tempo’ and its stream-of-consciousness, but it’s one of my all-time favourites)
- Mercy Street ~ Peter Gabriel (okay, this song ‘kills’ me… I think my list is going astray.. hahah!
The word/concept/suggestion of ‘mercy’ will do that to me
Back to Business! Many more Gabriel songs, but that’s another given. You can’t resist genius and inspiration such as his! Okay, well maybe you can
) - Do You Believe ~ Joydrop
- Strawberry Marigold ~ Joydrop
- EVERYTHING from Jann Arden’s ~ Happy?, special mention to Saved, Holy Moses, Leave Me Now and Hangin’ By a Thread (if this last one doesn’t humble you silly and knock the wind out of you… well, have you checked your pulse lately?!
) - Mend ~ Jann Arden
- Sorry For Myself ~ Jann Arden
- Peace Train (Cat Stevens cover, woohoo!) ~ Jann Arden
- At Seventeen (Janis Ian cover, more woohoo!) ~ Jann Arden (okay :sighs: most of her Uncover Me album does it, with the exception of 2, I think :P)
- Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man) ~ Styx (+ditto
) - The Best of Times ~ Styx
- Don’t Let it End ~ Styx
- Throw in the rest of the ‘best of’ Styx! Heheheh.
- And Journey!
- Too Much Time On My Hands (clap!clap!
) ~ Styx - Many Loreena McKennitt songs, notably any(every)thing from the album The Visit
- ADDENDUM! (making it 36, hah) The Twin Peaks (TV) Soundtrack ~ Angelo Badalamenti (with vocals by Julee Cruise)
- Most Luba; and the best for last…
- Let it Go ~ Luba
I hope you found something of interest in here (if you did, why not digg it down there under ‘Share this’?
;) :nudgenudge:
It feels as though I missed so many - it hurts!
Let me know your own ‘therapy’ or ‘killer’ songs; I’d love to see:
a) if we share any faves;
b) flesh out the millions I missed (hahahah); and, most importantly,
c) discover any new ones from your input!
I hope you are all taking good care of yourselves, and rockin’ out wherever you are!
I leave you with … Luba! Yay!
Lyrics approved by me, only a few minor typo corrections, and sourced from quite an ‘old’ place, if the ‘updated on’ info is correct (2003 or so). Anyway, they were the best I could find, so thank you dexxus, whoever you are!
♪ Let It Go ♫
Too many doubts, too much fear, too much danger
When society constructs our human nature
Live by the rules, live by the law, live by commandments
Notions preconceived can lead to utter madness
Chorus
Let it go
Let it go, let it free your body, let it move your soul
Let it go, oh, no, we are made we are not born
x2
Learn to convert, learn to assert, learn to abandon
Ideologies and disciplines at random
Lay down my laws, lay down the rules, lay down commandments
Lift the sanctions that restrict this woman’s madness
Chorus
Uniformity, conventionality, is the fate of our existence
Keep it safely at a distance
Nonconformity, unconventionality is the fate to be?
Let your hair down can’t you see
Chorus
A woman is made she is not born, let it go…
Let it go, let it free your head and symbolize your soul
Let it go…

Brain fried… too much ‘putering.
